Ian has also continued his educational program by obtaining the FRI (Fellowship of the Real Estate Institute) and CRES (Certified Real Estate Specialist) designations from the Real Estate Institute of Canada. He is also a member of the R.E.I.B.C. - Real Estate Institute of British Columbia.

Ian is an active member of the community. He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach and was the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach - Sunrise. He has been actively involved in fundraising for major community facilities as well as for the Fine Arts programs in schools throughout the area. Ian frequently provides strategic analysis for local charitable organizations. In 2002, Ian was named Citizen of the year for Qualicum Beach.
